After years of playing in various bands, most notably The Executive, Michael and Ridgeley formed the group Wham! Michael was the lead vocalist and main songwriter and played keyboards, while Ridgeley played guitar and sang backing vocals. CBS Records (later Sony Music) chose Wham! to designate a solo album by Michael and Ridgeley, and released a solo recording of guitar and drums by Albert's son Ridgeley in 1990. His brother Paul, an occasional percussionist for Bananarama, played drums on the album. Singles include "Shake" and "Red Dress."
"Shake", the lead single from his solo album, reached number 16 on the Australian chart and number 58 on the UK Singles Chart. "Shake" was the 81st best-selling single of 1990 in Australia. "The Red Dress" was a hit in Australia, but peaked outside the top 100.
After the poor sales of Sons of Albert, CBS dropped the option to release a second album, which was panned by critics and failed to enter the top 75 of the UK Albums Chart. Son of Albert was one of the worst-received albums of 1990, earning only a half star in Rolling Stone's brutal review. Ridgeley later said, "It's disappointing and frustrating that the album was such a huge success."
